KGI Offers Two Tracks in PhD

Traditional Track

In the Traditional Track, you conduct your PhD studies on KGI’s campus under the supervision of faculty from the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences, the School of Pharmacy, or the School of Health Sciences. To support interdisciplinary research, you may work with one or more research advisors—at least one will be a KGI faculty member, while others may come from collaborating institutions.

Tuition for this track is typically covered by external grants or institutional funding, and you’ll also receive a stipend to help with living expenses. If you are an international student, you may be responsible for paying tuition and covering your own living expenses.

Industry Track

In the Industry Track, you’ll receive support from a biotechnology, medtech, or pharmaceutical company and conduct your research on behalf of that company. This is a great option for employees looking to advance into principal scientist roles. In addition to working with a company research advisor, you’ll also be supervised by a KGI faculty advisor to ensure academic alignment. Your dissertation research will typically take place at the company site with remote engagement with KGI, but it can also take place within the laboratories of KGI.

Tuition is typically at least partially covered by your industry sponsor or through tuition remission from your employer. If you are not fully supported by an industry sponsor, you may be responsible for paying some or all tuition costs. In cases where you are not employed by the sponsor, a stipend is usually provided through a contractual agreement between the company and KGI.
