How do I connect my laptop to the network?Students Before connecting a laptop to the network it must have antivirus software and the latest Windows updates installed. AVG antivirus works well if you don't own antivirus software. We also recommend that you consider using personal firewall software for example (Zone Alarm or Tiny Personal Firewall - search for the product name). Spyware is a huge problem now. We recommend that you use anti-spyware freeware packages for example Spybot and SpywareBlaster on your personal PC. 802.11b wireless access is available in both buildings. Your wireless card's MAC address must be registered with the IT department before you can connect to the wireless network. How do I access KGI resources while off campus? Outlook Web Access and SSH are a couple of methods used to connect KGI resources from off campus. What is the URL for KGI e-mail web access? Web Access: Using either Internet Explorer or Firefox for web address to access your KGI e-mail is http://mail.kgi.edu. When prompted for your username in Internet Explorer enter kgi\user id. When prompted for your username in Firefox enter only your user id without the kgi\ in front. How do I install and use VPN? Faculty/Staff Contact the IT department. How do I install and use SSH? SSH: First step, get a copy of ssh from the public folder. - While you're connected to the network here at KGI, you can go to 'Start' > 'Run' and enter \\Corcovado\public\SSH to access the folder. You will need to enter your user id and password to gain access. - Copy the program and the license_dat.txt file to your notebook. - Double-click on the program file to install it. - Two icons should be added to your desktop, one for 'SSH Secure Shell Client' and the other for 'SSH Secure File Transfer Client' Setup the license for ssh. - After installing ssh, rename the license_dat.txt file to license.dat on your notebook. - Start the 'SSH Secure File Transfer Client' and go to 'Help' > 'Import License File'. - Locate the license.dat file on your notebook and click on the 'Open' button. Using ssh. - For file transfers, use the program labeled 'SSH Secure File Transfer Client'. - Start the program by double-clicking on the icon. - Click on the 'Quick Connect' button. - Enter corcovado.kgi.edu as the host name. - Enter your user id (don't include kgi\). - Click on connect. - Enter your password (see the note below before you do this) - Once you've connected you will see 2 separate folder windows. The folder on the left is your local system and the folder on the right is your user folder on Corcovado. - To copy files, locate the file you want to copy in the appropriate window and drag it to the other window. - Choose 'File' > 'Disconnect' to logoff. Changing the password - To change your password, start the 'SSH Secure File Transfer Client' - Choose 'Window' > 'New Terminal' - A terminal window will open with a Unix shell prompt. Enter the command: yppasswd - The system will prompt for your existing and new passwords. You should receive the message 'password successfully changed' after entering and confirming the new password. - Note that the passwords do not synchronize.
