Students at career fairFor most young scientists on the Ph.D./postdoc track, deciding which of several lucrative job offers to accept isn't an issue that comes up all that often. But for many in one of the professional science master's (PSM) programs now proliferating around the country, it is literally a $64,000 question. "They get multiple offers," often at salaries around that figure, says Christine Sjolander, associate vice president for enrollment management and director of career services at Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences in Claremont, California. PSM alumni "are so in demand that we're actually trying to boost our enrollment because we can't keep up."

Next Generation Bioscience Leaders Featured in Claremont Courier

Keck Graduate Institute and Smith College Executive Education for Women recently joined forces to give 36 female bioscience leaders from across the nation, and even internationally, an extra boost when the schools put on the Next Generation Bioscience Leaders Conference, held in Claremont from January 13-18.

KGI Research Cited in Naturejobs Column

In the latest edition of Naturejobs, a column by Gene Russo cites the work of KGI alum Helen Liu (’07) and Professor Molly Schmid who compiled a report on biotechnology jobs. Their findings showed that less than 20 percent of the open jobs were for research and development, while the rest were for jobs related to the business side of the companies, indicating a large demand for employees with both science and business skills, like those possessed by KGI students.
