Keck Graduate Institute

The W. M. Keck Foundation - KGI's Founding Funder
Keck Graduate Institute's history of corporate and foundation support began with a $50 million founding grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation followed by the current matching grant challenge of $20 million. The purpose of the foundation's latest grant is to challenge greater support from corporations, foundations and individuals to help KGI attain financial sustainability. Thanks to the foundation's initial investment KGI recruited exceptional faculty and developed core infrastructure, teaching laboratories and classrooms.

Support for New Initiatives

The Center for Rare Disease Therapies
The Kenneth T. & Eileen L. Norris Foundation recently committed $250,000 to help launch the Center for Rare Disease Therapies. This grant will help KGI educate students in conjunction with opportunities to help those with rare diseases. The center is working with government agencies, biotech companies and patient advocate groups to increase the number of orphan drug designations, write position papers and increase awareness of the unmet needs of those with a rare disease but no treatments. Other supporters include Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a companydedicated to creating novel medicines for the unmet needs of patients with rare diseases.

The Center for Biomarkers Research
The Beckman Coulter Foundation's grant of $150,000 supports the planning phase of KGI's Center for Biomarkers Research. The Center will investigate new biomarkers for rare and other diseases that are difficult to diagnose with current in vitro diagnostic tests. Initially the Center will focus on biomarkers for cells, using flow cytometry. Future activities will expand to include the investigation of other genomic and proteomic biomarkers. A leader in advanced biological testing, Beckman Coulter, Inc. (BCI) has been one of KGI's strongest corporate supporters. BCI has sponsored seven Team Masters Projects, which provide Master of Bioscience (MBS) students with the chance to work on real-world problems facing industry. BCI has contributed generously to KGI throughout the years through its financial support and participation on KGI's corporate Advisory Council. The company also has hired several MBS graduates and provided a number of summer internships to KGI students.
