What degrees are offered at Keck Graduate Institute? Keck Graduate Institute offers three degrees. The first and primary is the Master of Bioscience (MBS) degree. The MBS program is available in a traditional full time format. The KGI faculty is currently reviewing options for a part-time Fully-Employed format, but a start date has yet to be determined. All students with an interest in the life sciences are encouraged to learn more about admission at www.kgi.edu/Apply.xml. The second degree offered is the Ph.D. in Applied Life Sciences. This program is only available to graduates of the MBS. The third degree is a Ph.D in Computational and Systems Biology offered jointly with Claremont Graduate University. < Back to top > What is the MBS degree? The Master of Bioscience (MBS) program educates leaders for the bioscience industry who are able to unlock the relationships between business, engineering, and science. Its two intense years of cross-disciplinary study are filled with work on real-world projects with leaders in the bioscience industry. The program requires an industry internship and participation in an industry-sponsored Team Masters Project. The MBS is a professional science master's degree program. < Back to top > Can I transfer credit from another Master's program to KGI? Our course curriculum for the full-time MBS is specific to KGI and cannot be adapted to accept credit from other institutions. All admitted students work with an academic advisor to assess their background and select coursework. < Back to top > Does KGI offer a MBS program for fully employed professionals? Not yet. The KGI faculty is currently reviewing a plan to launch a fully employed version of the MBS program for industry professionals who are looking to advance their career, but a start date has yet to be determined.< Back to top > Do I need to take management/business courses before I apply? Management or business courses are not pre-requisites for admission to the MBS program. All students must submit the following materials: - Online application form
- $75 Application fee
- Current resume or C.V.
- Personal statement and supplemental essay
- Official scores from the GRE, MCAT, or GMAT
- Official transcripts from every undergraduate institution attended
- 3 Recommendation letters
International applicants who reside outside of the U.S. and those who have been enrolled at a U.S. institution fewer than two years will need to submit official scores from the TOEFL in addition to the above mentioned items. < Back to top > What are the school codes needed to send my standardized test scores to KGI? GRE and TOEFL scores may be sent to KGI by using school code: 4166. A department code is not necessary. GMAT scores are sent to KGI by specifying the name of our program to test administrators. MCAT scores can only be sent to KGI in the form of a printout. This may be sent via e-mail or postal mail. Please be sure that your MCAT score printout includes a verification code. < Back to top > Do I need to submit transcripts for every college-level class I have taken? Yes. KGI requires transcripts from all undergraduate and higher education institutions attended, even if you did not earn a degree from that school. If you fail to submit all required documentation, your application will be placed on hold until the necessary documentation is received. < Back to top > Does KGI accept notarized copies of transcripts? No. Transcripts must be sealed and bear the original seal and signature of the registrar. < Back to top > Does KGI offer fee waivers for the application fee? KGI does not typically waive or defer the required $75 graduate admissions application fee. < Back to top > Do I have to submit all of my application materials together? No. You can send in materials at your discretion. Applicants will receive e-mailed status updates on the items needed to complete their applications. Applications will be considered in the context of the total applicant pool, as well as in relation to our general admission standards. We do not use arbitrary grade point or test score cutoffs. The median GRE scores for admitted students in the Class of 2009 were as follows*: GRE Verbal: 550 Quantitative: 720 Analytical: 4.5 < Back to top > What GPA is required for admission? Applications will be considered in the context of the total applicant pool, as well as in relationship to our general admission standards. We do not use arbitrary grade point or test score cutoffs. The median GPA for admitted students in the Class of 2009 was 3.2. < Back to top > How much is tuition at KGI? The tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year is $36,450. A slight increase in tuition amount from year to year is to be expected. < Back to top > Does KGI offer tuition waivers? No, KGI does not offer tuition waivers. However, a combination of fellowship and scholarship awards, that can cover tuition expenses, are available to admitted students. < Back to top > What financial aid resources does KGI offer? We encourage students to apply early in order to receive first consideration for the W. M. Keck Foundation Fellowship. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit and the overall promise shown by an applicant. Scholarship and fellowship funds require an on campus interview for students residing in the U.S. Please contact the Office of Admissions for further information. Yes. Career services cultivates internship opportunities, but it is the responsibility of the student to secure the internship.
